Alternative sources of funding?

As I'm sure most of us can appreciate, one of the major barriers to prospective PhD students beginning their studies is lack of funding. I am, therefore, and by virtue of my former career as a student funding co-ordinator (yuck!), in the process of compiling a factsheet listing alternative sources of funding, i.e. charities and educational trusts.

I would be very interested to hear from YOU, dear Attic readers, about sources of funding from which you have managed to secure funding, even if it is only a small amount, either prior to, or during your postgraduate studies. I'll then post the list of sources here.

Many thanks.

*whimper* My feelings are still raw from being rejected for some three major funding sources...

God bless my lovely wonderful employer(s) for being flexible and allowing me to continue working as I start the program PT LD...

Beyond Fulbright and a few other funding long-shots, is there anything to your knowledge available--as "j." just wrote--for American research PhD, DL students?
I'll let you know if I discover anything relevant. Thanks, Andrew Wulf (new student, as of last month)

Welcome J and Andrew - great to hear from you both. J - are you on the Leicester DL programme?

There is already some funding information on the Department website (I discovered the other day!): http://www.le.ac.uk/ms/research/researchfunding.html

But, I'm working on pulling together a list of other sources. I don't know what each of your individual circumstances are, so I can't directly advise on any schemes for which you might meet the eligibility criteria, but I will - hopefully - turn something up shortly. Rest assured I am on the case! ;)

Andrew: I'm Canadian, so in much the same International student boat as you... I've been applying for Canada-based funding, but there is only very few sources: The Commonwealth, the SSHRC, the Lougheed (provincial), and the UAW (University women's associations, federal and provincial, but the sums are much smaller than the preceding three).

Amy: (We corresponded via email a couple of months ago.) I will be on the DL programme, though I was hoping to finally start (after deferring for a year) as FT CB. But as my funding fell through, I will have to work as I reapply. Hopefully next year, I'll be able to start in earnest.

Ah, I remember now - of course!! It was the enigmatic 'J' that threw me. ;) I may have turned up some possible sources of funding that you could apply to (if you haven't already, of course!). Being female and from a Commonwealth country helps in this respect. Sorry Andrew! I'll try and get that list (at least #1 of the list) posted shortly.
