Historic Images of Leicester

Some fascinating vintage photographs of Leicester from the English Heritage archive are available to view here. The 1930s shots of Lewis' Department Store are particular favourites of mine.

I feel so bereft of a Leicester I never knew when I saw those pictures - Lewis's in particular was a damn fine building and a travesty is in its place. I know we have to have progress and all but there are some things worth keeping and elegant 30s department stores are one of them - such a shame only the tower is left no wonder it looks so weirdly disconnected today.
