Is there life beyond a PhD?
Perhaps it's just my fear of being pigeon-holed, (I still harbour dreams of becoming the BBC's first female football commentator, or an internationally renowned textile artist!), but recently I've been quite preoccupied with coming up with a list of celebrities and other well known people with PhDs, who are predominantly known for something else. So far I have this paltry list:
- Gordon Brown - though, strangely, his official biography doesn't mention it
- Brian May
- Ben Miller
Are there any more? The finality of becoming Dr Barnes is causing me anxiety; what if I have nothing left to strive for? I need to know that there is life outside academia beyond a PhD. And, just to make things worse, I keep reading surveys that suggest that women with PhDs are more likely to remain singletons. Am I destined to become spinster of this parish? Questions, questions, questions...

If being single with a PhD concerns you, console yourself with the knowledge that single women and married men live the longest...
And I couldn't call my PhD-holding mum a celeb, but she *is* celebrating 28 years of happy marriage this year...
